  • Picking a registrar Part II - Migrating to IzyCloud

  • In the second part of the series we will talk about how to migrate your domain to IzyCloud. IzyCloud offers full service brand management solutions that will automate the usual maintenance tasks associated with your domain.

  • Introduction

    IzyDomains is the recommended app for maintaining an online presensence. It provides the following features:
    • Manage and automate all domain related maintance tasks via your free IzyCloud email address. The IzyCloud system will automatically process the domain related communications for you.
    • Rollout services and apps in a few minutes using the integrated app framework built around IzyDomains.
    • Free and automatic infrastructure pieces: Free SSL cerficiates, Free auto-scaling, etc.

    1. Switch DNS service provider

    If the current registrar is also the DNS service provider for your domain and you are planning on customizing your DNS entries then you must transfer the DNS service and the DNS records for the domain by following these two sub items.

    You should only customize the DNS entries if you are planning on creating and rolling out non standard IzyCloud apps. All the existing IzyCloud apps will automatically configure the DNS entries once the domain is attached to IzyWare so that you dont need to take any actions.

    If non of these are needed simply just skip to step 2.

    Export your current DNS records

    The common format for this is called a Zone File. It will look like this:

    ; Domain: mydomain.com

    ; Exported (y-m-d hh:mm:ss): 2018-05-23 17:15:07

    ;

    ; This file is intended for use for informational and archival

    ; purposes ONLY and MUST be edited before use on a production

    ; DNS server.

    ;

    ; In particular, you must update the SOA record with the correct

    ; authoritative name server and contact e-mail address information,

    ; and add the correct NS records for the name servers which will

    ; be authoritative for this domain.

    ;

    ; For further information, please consult the BIND documentation

    ; located on the following website:

    ;

    ; http://www.isc.org/

    ;

    ; And RFC 1035:

    ;

    ; http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1035.txt

    ;

    ; Please note that we do NOT offer technical support for any use

    ; of this zone data, the BIND name server, or any other third-

    ; party DNS software.

    ;

    ; Use at your own risk.

    .....

    note: most registrars provide an option for the zone file export.

    Submit the Zone File via your IzyCloud dashboard DNS app

    This will setup DNS support on IzyCloud for your domain by reproducing your current DNS configuration inside IzyCloud.
    • In IzyDomain, create a domain that has the same name as your domain.
    • Upload the Zone File (Cut/Paste the contents) to the item. All the records except NS and SOA records will be processed and added.
    • Wait until the Zone File is processed and accepted by the IzyCloud. You will get a confirmation email once this happens.
    • Once accepted, IzyCloud will send you an email containing the IzyDNS servers that you need to update the NS record in your current DNS service provide to use IzyCloud.
    • Go to your current registrar, and update the NS records with the information provided in the email.
    • Verify that everything (traffic, email, etc.) is working fine after the switch. If you are using IzyCloud Watch rerun the tests and make sure they all pass.

    2. Transfer

    Verify and Update Registrant Contact Information

    Verify that the email for the registrant contact for your domain is pointing to your IzyMail address.

    The domain registry system will use this mail box to send authotization codes and links and communicate the on-going status of the migration.

    Your IzyMail address will have the following format:

    customerid.orgid.accountid@izyware.com

    Your IzyMail address is available in the Account Settings section of your IzyCloud dashboard.

    Unlock the domain through the registrar

    To allow IzyCloud to request a transfer you must unlock the domain. Unlocking will authorize Izyware to send a request to your registrar for transferring the domain.

    Initiate the transfer process in the IzyDomain app

    In the IzyDomain app, request a transfer.

    The system will wait until a transfer is authorized by the registrar (for example, if the domain is unlocked in the current registrar).

    Note that this action is only available to Enterprise Administrator accounts. If you are using a non Admin account, please request this action from your admin.

    Once accepted, the domain should show up in your dashboard and the status should be set to transfer in progress.

    Wait for the registrars to complete the transfer

    The IzyDomain app will use your IzyMail mailbox to interface with the domain registrars and may contact you only if neccessary. You may recieve email instructions on the following:

    • Unlocking the domain via your existing registrar.
    • Requesting an authorization code from your registrar. We sometimes have to provide this code to the AWS Route53 service to request a transfer.

    The process usually takes less than an hour, but in some cases it may take up to 2 weeks to complete.

    Once the transfer has been completed the domain status will change to active.

    3. DNS Updates (Admin Only)

    When the domain is activated (you will recieve an email notification about this), update the DNS entries for the services that you are planning to attach to the domain.

    Parked Domains

    First make sure the registrar is setup to point to the name server. For example, if you are using Route53 you should double check the Registered Domains section for this item. Make sure they are set to the values found in NS records section for the domain under the Hosted Zones section.

    Then you should make sure that A records (for web enabled apps and services) are set correctly:

    IzyCloud Account Alias

    If you would like to connect your domain to IzyCloud from AWS Route 53 do:

    • Create Hosted Zone with the name of your domain. The SOA and NS records will automatically be created.
    • Create Record Set
    • Leave the default name, which is the name of your domain.
    • For Type, select A ϟПϑÁ±ÏŸá˜Ï‘ÁÏŸÁ±Ï‘ÁϠК IPv4 address.
    • For Alias, choose Yes.
    • Choose Alias Target.

    4. Attach Apps to the Domain

    Once the transfer is completed and the domain is active, you should be able to start using the domain by attaching it to the IzyCloud apps (IzyMail, IzyCMS, etc.) of your choice.
